When on Google Earth 77

Even after locating Chuck's site on the ground, I spent quite some time playing "name that Tell"! WOGE 76 turned out to be the Bronze Age mound of Tell Hadir near Aleppo, Syria. (Of course, there was a U. of Chicago connection ...). Here is a radically different challenge for WOGE 77:

If you can identify this site and its main period of occupation, then post your comment below. You can always follow WOGE on the Facebook group.

The Rules of When on Google Earth are as follows:

Q: What is When on Google Earth?

A: It’s a game for archaeologists, or anybody else willing to have a go!

Q: How do you play it?
A: Simple, you try to identify the site in the picture.

Q: Who wins?

A: The first person to correctly identify the site, including its major period of occupation, wins the game.

Q: What does the winner get?

A: The winner gets bragging rights and the chance to host the next When on Google Earth on his/her own blog!

When on Google Earth 72

I came across the solution to Oliver's WOGE 71 by accident (though of course I should have known it anyway!) — it's the Kassite palace mound at Dur-Kurigalzu (mod. Aqar Quf), near Baghdad, Iraq —, so here is something quite different as my challenge for WOGE 72:

If you can identify this site and its main period of occupation, then post your comment below. You can always join the new Facebook group to keep up to date with WOGE. I'm still having trouble inserting the list of previous winners and sites chosen so far, but you'll find an almost up-to-date version at the link to WOGE 71 given above.

When on Google Earth 68

I figured out the Viking age Kanhave canal, Denmark, posted by Troels as WOGE 67, so here is my challenge for WOGE 68:

When on Google Earth 62

I cracked WOGE 61 by identifying Delos (but failed to solve Paul's additional question - duh) so here is my challenge for WOGE 62:

When on Google Earth 56

OK, after getting the correct answer to WOGE 55 (without the aid of Geoff's pizza clue, I hasten to add), which was the site of Nemrut Dagi near Adiyaman in south-east Turkey, here is my challenge for WOGE 56:

If you can identify this site and its main period of occupation, then post your comment below. It's late at night here and I'm too technically challenged to reproduce the list of previous winners, but you can always join the new Facebook group to keep up to date with WOGE.

When on Google Earth 45

I've just identified the Hellenistic/Roman site of Olympus in southern Turkey (WOGE 44, posted by Nigel at Moore Group's Blog), so here is my challenge for WOGE 45:

No attempts at a solution logged yet (12 June), so here's another view:

here is my challenge for WOGE 20:

Like previous winners, I too have been fighting with Blogger so I am going to stick to the barest of essentials!
