When on Google Earth 45

I've just identified the Hellenistic/Roman site of Olympus in southern Turkey (WOGE 44, posted by Nigel at Moore Group's Blog), so here is my challenge for WOGE 45:

No attempts at a solution logged yet (12 June), so here's another view:

If you can identify this site, post your comment below. You can always join the new Facebook group (thanks, Andrea! great idea) to keep up to date with WOGE.

The Rules of When on Google Earth are as follows:

Q: What is When on Google Earth?

A: It’s a game for archaeologists, or anybody else willing to have a go!

Q: How do you play it?
A: Simple, you try to identify the site in the picture.

Q: Who wins?

A: The first person to correctly identify the site, including its major period of occupation, wins the game.

Q: What does the winner get?

A: The winner gets bragging rights and the chance to host the next When on Google Earth on his/her own blog!

  1. OK, here's a clue: the site is by a major river.

  3. Hi Heather, don’t worry I don’t give up! ;-)
It’s part of the roman site carnuntum on the south bank of the Danube, on the main road halfway between Vienna and Bratislava, in village Petronell(Freilichtmuseum Petronell), Austria.

  4. Well done Ferhan! It is indeed Carnuntum. To my shame, I haven't yet been there, though it's only 'down the road'. Over to you, then ...

  5. It's not a shame! I I grew up very close to Olympus, which you have identified shortly and never been there!! There are lot of places in the world and closest ones are the less interesting ones ;)
Now I'm proud to present to you When on Google Earth 46
