When on Google Earth 77

Even after locating Chuck's site on the ground, I spent quite some time playing "name that Tell"! WOGE 76 turned out to be the Bronze Age mound of Tell Hadir near Aleppo, Syria. (Of course, there was a U. of Chicago connection ...). Here is a radically different challenge for WOGE 77:

If you can identify this site and its main period of occupation, then post your comment below. You can always follow WOGE on the Facebook group.

The Rules of When on Google Earth are as follows:

Q: What is When on Google Earth?

A: It’s a game for archaeologists, or anybody else willing to have a go!

Q: How do you play it?
A: Simple, you try to identify the site in the picture.

Q: Who wins?

A: The first person to correctly identify the site, including its major period of occupation, wins the game.

Q: What does the winner get?

A: The winner gets bragging rights and the chance to host the next When on Google Earth on his/her own blog!

  1. No attempts yet, so here's a clue: the image shows only a small stretch of what is quite an extensive feature.

  2. I'm getting an Offa's Dyke (8th c. protecting Mercia from Powys) vibe, but can't locate this section on Google Earth.

  3. Well done, Chuck - Offa's Dyke is correct. And yes, it is difficult to locate much of the earthwork on Google Earth (it is traceable for c. 80 miles on the ground). This particular stretch is c. 2.5 km NNW of the town of Knighton. I think you can surely be declared winner anyway as you identified the monument correctly.
